While you may think that if you’ve seen one barcode, you’ve seen them all, the truth is, there are a lot of different coding styles used by different industries. Here are some of the barcodes you may have seen so far:

  • Code 39 Barcode – this is a barcode that is often used in many industrial settings. This can be seen utilized for inventory purposes, tracking needs and product identification requirements. This code can be found in various forms – the low, medium and high-density variants.  The length of these barcodes is dependent on the information and data contained in these bar combinations, with maximum number of alphanumeric characters for these codes pegged at 43.
  • Code 128 Barcode – this is a high density type of code that can use all 128 ASCII characters. This barcode type has 6 sections: the quiet zone, the start character, encoded data, check character, stop character and another quiet zone. Human readable characters on this kind of barcode may or may not be added, depending on what the user wants. Just like Code 39, this can be used for a wide variety of purposes and industries.
  • U.P.C. – this acronym stands for Universal Product Code and is probably the barcode type you are most familiar with. This is the barcode that you usually see at the back of retail products and is scanned at the point of sale. The most common variant of this barcode carries 12 numerical digits. UPC barcodes follow a specific data structure that is dictated by GS1 global specifications.
  • 2-D Datamatrix/ UID – this 2-dimensional code is also called a matrix code and is often used by numerousUID Plate industries due to the fact that this can represent more data than linear bar codes. This particular code can store up to 500 characters and the square symbol used is scalable. This particular barcode is used to mark small items like circuit boards and integrated circuits. The reason why this kind of a barcode is used for these small items is because of its capability to carry numerous characters on it in such a small amount of space.
